Review: Darken the Stars by Amy A. Bartol

Darken the Stars by Amy A. Bartol
Kricket Series
Book 3

Blurb:

Kyon Ensin finally has what he’s always wanted: possession of Kricket Hollowell, the priestess who foresees the future. Together, their combined power will be unrivaled. Kricket, however, doesn’t crave the crown of Ethar—she has an unbreakable desire to live life on her own terms, a life that she desperately wants to share with her love, Trey Allairis.

As conspiracies rage in the war for Ethar, Kricket’s so-called allies want to use her as a spy. Even those held closest cannot be trusted—including Astrid, her sister, and Giffen, a member of a mysterious order with a hidden agenda. But Kricket’s resolve will not allow her to be used as anyone’s pawn, even as the Brotherhood sharpens its plans to cut out her heart.

As the destiny prophesied by her mother approaches, Kricket will backtrack through her fiery future to reshape it. For she knows one thing above all else: the only person she can truly count on is herself.

Review:

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved the Premonition Series by Amy A. Bartol. So when I had the chance to review this book I was ecstatic. It wasn't only this book that I was looking forward to but the entire Kricket Series!  A lot happens in this book and it leaves you feeling shocked yet happy at the same time and only Amy A. Bartol can do this without disappointing you!

This book leaves off right where the second one ended with Kricket in Kyon's grasp. Kyon has her and he doesn't want to ever let her go! Kricket deals with a whole different situation in this book, learning that her father is still alive and in another sector of Ethar and on top of that, she has a younger sister who is also from two different sectors (who could also be the prophecy). Later in the book she even learns what her true fate is which will truly shock you and also makes you feel bad for Kricket.

I do get some what upset with Kricket for various reasons throughout the book. One is that she gave in so easily to Kyon and seems to almost fall for him. I definitely saw that one coming and was sort of rooting for that to happen. I liked his snarky comments in the previous books but I think I somewhat fell in love with Kyon throughout this book.  I love Trey but I also wanted to see more of Kyon, to see what all this mystery was about him and why he wanted Kricket so badly. I didn't know how far things would go for the two but I was still rooting for Kyon because you see a different side of him. You see this sensitive side where he truly cares but then you see his crazy intense side where you are scared for Krickets life. I was happy to see what happens between the two of them.

Trey... ugh I still love him! *sigh* I really can't believe Trey wasn't trying harder to get Kricket back from Kyon... the one person he would never want near her. On top of that, Trey learns of Krickets fate and doesn't tell her when he has the chance and she calls him out on it. He ends up asking her to follow her fate to save his family. My heart breaks for her at this moment because she would do anything for him, but it seems as though he only cares for his family. I don't believe Trey and Krickets story ends there because I believe that Trey will follow her to the end of time. However, I also think Kyon will do the same.

Now onto Krickets father ... Pan. I don't understand why he cares so much for one daughter but completely turned his back on his other daughter. Even if her fate has been stated, he shouldn't just throw her to the wolves. Some people may see him as a hero but all I see him as is nothing but a dead beat father.

Kricket has enemies everywhere and it seems as though there is nowhere for her in this world. She doesnt know who to trust anymore and if she turns to someone she loves, then they will only end up in the crossfire. So instead she runs back to Earth, leaving us wanting to find out what she will be doing there with Phlix.

At one point, I was almost scared to turn the pages because I didn't know what new twist there would be or who Krickets new enemy would be. This cannot be the ending to the series with so many loose ends. Please Amy A. Bartol please don't make this the last book in the series because I NEED to know what happens next! Does she choose Trey or Kyon?

~About the Author~

I live in Michigan with my husband and our two sons. My family is very supportive of my writing. When I’m writing, they often bring me the take-out menu so that I can call and order them dinner. They listen patiently when I talk about my characters like they’re real. They rarely roll their eyes when I tell them I’ll only be a second while I finish writing a chapter…and then they take off their coats. They ask me how the story is going when I surface after living for hours in a world of my own making. They have learned to accept my “writing uniform” consisting of a slightly unflattering pink fleece jacket, t-shirt, and black yoga pants. And they smile at my nerdy bookishness whenever I try to explain urban fantasy to them. In short, they get me, so they are perfect and I am blessed.
